The 1930s Airpeed Tern was one of the earliest British-designed gliders and the first built by Airspeed Limited atYork. It had a generous cockpit forward of the fixed center section wing, no airbrakes or spoilers and fixed main and tail skids with removable main landing wheel.

Designed by Hessell Tiltman and Nevil Shute Norway for cloud and hill soaring and to gain records and publicity for the new Airspeed company, it gained the first British distance record of 8.3 miles.

Only one example was completed although parts for a second were produced. After lanquishing through the Second World War, the Tern was rebuilt using parts from both but was not flown extensively. Current whereabouts are unknown.
